The patient repeatedly addresses prohibitory statements to himself in the form: \u00ab\u00a0What sacrifice am I prepared to make in order to . . . ?\u00a0\u00bb (p. 271). It could not be more succinctly expressed that the suture of the subject demands the sacrifice of <em>jouissance<\/em>. Greed and austerity paradoxically concur for him who is willing to forego his <em>jouissance<\/em> for the sake of vindicating the signifier. This attitude qualifies the alienation denoted as \u00ab\u00a0<strong>I am not thinking.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb It implies <strong>a rejection of the unconscious that can be expressed as \u00ab\u00a0I am counting.\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong> Lacan followed Freud&rsquo;s text <em>verbatim<\/em> when reading the signifier \u00ab\u00a0rat\u00a0\u00bb as <em>jouissance<\/em> written off to the signifier: <strong>the obsessional posts his <em>jouissance<\/em> like cash to the ledger.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In his addendum to the Rat Man case (S.E., X, pp. 253-318), Freud is aware of this paradox.
