At four o’ clock in the morning, the telephone began to ring patiently. The sound slipped into a dream and waited. On-the eighth ring, the dreamer woke, and for a moment, there was only darkness and the soft ticking of a clock. Then the awareness came-the strange hour, the waiting sound, the sense that something, somewhere, had already gone wrong. The receiver was lifted. A voice spoke. It was careful. Too careful. « There’s been an accident. »

Miles away, beyond the sleeping houses and the empty city, stood a factory. It was a place of ordinary industry: metal breathing steam, machines turning with tireless certainty, people in bright helmets moving through tasks they knew by heart. Pipes ran through it like veins through a great mechanical body. Valves blinked small red lights. Gauges watched with unblinking eyes. And in the hour before dawn, one of those veins gave a shudder.
